Thurs. 6/13/19 - Check-In
- Check-in (2:00)
- Wine and Cheese Reception (6:00 – 7:30)
- Pre-Ride Rider Meetings (6:30)
Check-in for the Sunrise Adventure will be at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center between 2:00 and 6:00 pm.
After you have checked in, take some time to explore downtown Alpena and the surrounding area. Be sure to join us back at the museum for the wine and cheese reception at 6:00 pm.
At 6:30 pm, we will hold our introductory rider meeting. At these short meetings, we will introduce the rules of LMB’s tours and go over the next day’s route. Once we’re done, you’re free to hit the town!
Fri. 6/14/19 - Hubbard Lake Area (35-48-62 miles)
The Sunrise weekend will begin with spectacular views of the sunrise for those getting up early enough. After a hearty breakfast at Alpena Community College, we will be on the road to the Hubbard Lake area. The college will be our home base for the next three days.
Hubbard Lake is the 12th largest inland lake in Michigan. The area boasts many places to fuel up and have lunch. You’ll love the beautiful scenery as you circle the lake. At the top of Mt. Mariah, you will have a spectacular view of the lake and the surrounding area. To celebrate reaching the top, we will have a watermelon stop.
After leaving Hubbard Lake you will pass through Amish country as you head for Ossineke, a quaint village with family fun for all seasons. Ossineke has sandy beaches along Lake Huron that are excellent for swimming.
From Ossineke you will ride on the wide shoulders of US 23 as you hug the coast of Lake Huron back into Alpena. You will cross the 45th Parallel (halfway between the Equator and the North Pole), which is always a great photo opportunity. The route through Alpena will take you through downtown before ending back at Alpena Community College.
Sat. 6/15/19 - Presque Isle Wooden Boat Show and Lighthouses (21-39-59 miles)
All three routes today will take you to Presque Isle Harbor on Lake Huron. At the Harbor, you can stop and see the 21st Annual Antique Wooden Boat Show with dozens of authentic vintage wooden boats on display along with an arts and crafts show.
Down the road are the New Presque Isle Lighthouse, keeper’s house, and gift shop. There is plenty of maritime history to keep those aficionados interested. The picnic area is an ideal setting to stop and have a snack.
The real attraction for the day may be the Maplewood Tavern. This is part-tavern and part museum. It is the home of the Guinness World Record’s longest-serving bartender, 101-year-old Clarice Grenkowicz. She has been the primary bartender at the tavern for almost eighty years. This will be the site of a SAG stop for the long route and the starting point for the medium route, so you can experience it either on the way out or the way back. But don’t miss it! Just a short ride from the Harbor you will find the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse and have an opportunity to tour the light keeper’s cabin and climb the old light tower. It has a reputation for being haunted…so they say.
Sun. 6/16/19 - Thunder Bay River and Posen Area (27-34-50 miles)
We will start off Sunday by riding west along Thunder Bay River and Lake Winyah. We will then head north to Posen, before heading back to Alpena. Posen is the “Potato Capital of Michigan” and its rich farmlands and rolling woods provide an excellent backdrop for a bike ride.
As we conclude our ride it will be time to say goodbye to old friends and new ones we made along the way. As you pack up your gear and head home you will understand why the Sunrise Coast is a wonderful place to visit and experience year after year!
Riders must secure their own lodging for this tour.
Visit www.alpenacvb.com for great local options, including camping. Alpena Community College is our host for meals and Rider Meetings but does not permit camping on their grounds.
