You’ve
got mail!! Some remember
this as a blockbuster movie. But, for Sisters Cycling it marks the
beginning of a journey that’s been one heck of a ride.
It began innocently enough. An
e-mail sent on January 20, 1999 by Charlene McNary asking other women if
they were interested in jumpstarting their New Year’s resolutions by
joining her on a cycling team to raise funds for the American Diabetes
Association. On January 30, 1999 the Tour de Cure team, Sisters Cycling
Against Diabetes, was formed. Thirty-seven women, many of whom hadn’t
ridden a bike in years and even one who never learned as a child, joined
Charlene that day.
During the next six months the
Sisters prepared for what many thought to be an impossible task, cycle 50
miles. Many women hadn’t exercised in years and were scared they’d
never make it but everyone committed to the goal and a plan of attack was
developed. The Sisters set out to educate themselves about cycling and
fitness, support one another and give back to the community.
Sisters faithfully attended monthly
seminars where they learned how to pick a bike, design a training program,
ride safely and perform basic bike repairs. In late March they started
cycling and could be spotted at Belle Isle, Rouge Park, Hines Drive,
Island Lake Recreation Center, Grosse Pointe, Palmer Park and other
locations throughout the area.
Someone must have been watching
from high because angels were sent along the way. Constance and Vern
coached them up every hill and across every mile giving pointers and an
occasional push along the way. South Lyon Cycle opened their store on a
wintry day and helped them pick the right bikes. Dave volunteered his time
and answered the Sisters’ fitness questions in the newsletter.
While they prepared for the event
they were out pounding the pavement to raise funds. Each Sister put forth
her best effort and the Sisters raised $8,000. In addition the
DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund gave a $5,000 donation.
As the big day approached Sisters
began to ask "What do we do next?". Answer: Sisters Cycling
Bicycle Club.
In July 1999, Sisters Cycling
Bicycle Club was established.
