Advocacy Works!

Thanks to the lobbying efforts of the LMB and other bicycle advocacy groups, both the House and Senate passed in October the bicycle commuter tax provision. It will allow employers to offer "fringe" benefit reimbursement of up to $20/month to an employee who regularly commutes to work by bicycle. The expense must be related to the purchase, improvement, repair and storage of the bicycle. Check out Sec 211 of HR1424 here.

More information: Barbara Schmid bbschmid1@yahoo.com.

I've created a new webpage where we can post ride maps for club rides. They could be useful as a way to get a map to a substitute RC, or if you're just looking for a good ride in an unfamiliar part of town.

Look for the link next to the Ride Schedule link under the banner at the top of the our home page.

Bicycle Education Classes

The Rapidwheelmen will once again sponsor bicycle education classes. Members Barbara Schmid coordinates the events and Josh Duggan, a League of American Bicyclist instructor, teaches the classes.

Street Skills 101, formerly called Road 1, is an LAB course that helps beginner cyclists learn more about their bike, how to ride more safely in traffic and the rules of the road. Cost: $30. For more information or to sign up, write bicycleeducation@gmail.com. Or call Barb at 581-one-two-one-one.

Locations and classes:

July 17, 6-10 PM and July 18, 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM (must attend both). Venue TBD.

Interested in becoming a League Certified Instructor? A session is being offered in Grand Rapids, June 12-14. (Streets Skills 101 class is a pre-requisite). Register at www.bikeleague.org/resources/teach/ or call Josh at 295-one-one-five-four."

RAPID WHEELMEN RIDE FOR MS

Ride with the official Rapidwheelmen team  in the 2009 MS-150 ride June 13-14.  This is a very well supported ride and it will be my 18th time riding it.  There is a route for any ability level including 1-day and 2-day rides with 30, 50, 75 and 100 mile routes each day. The Start / Finish is at Holland High School, and the overnight location is Hope College.

We'll start together and eat dinner together as a group.  Wearing club jerseys and shorts encouraged!

This is a good way to promote our club, and help out a fantastic cause.  There is a $50 registration fee and you must raise a minimum of $250.  I have never had any problems raising the money for this ride, many people are affected by MS and like to support this worthy cause.

PedalGR 2008 in photos!

I've posted the best photos from PedalGR in 2008.  Check them out at

http://www.pedalgr.com

If you couldn't make it out, these photos will give you an idea of all the fun you missed.  The schedule for 2009 should be posted by the end of the month and I hope to see you all there!  And be sure to tell your friends who may not ride as much to check out the site.  PedalGR is for them, too.
