From the Big Wheel

Rich Moeller, LMB Executive Director
From the Winter '08 MI Bicyclist Magazine
In spite of the doom and gloom in Michigan’s economy, we all have something to be thankful for as we head into the new year. We at LMB are thankful for all the volunteers who worked to promote bicycling and the rights of bicyclists on the roadways in Michigan in 2007. Without all of their (your) help, John and I could not accomplish all the things that we do at LMB. Thank you!
Joyce Halstead is a perfect example. For 10 years, Joyce has served LMB and bicyclists throughout Michigan exceptionally as a Board Member. She has Chaired the Board of Directors and has been active in all major LMB initiatives during that time. Unfortunately, because of term limits, the League of Michigan Bicyclists board will lose her this January. I know Joyce has made my job easier. She assures me that she will remain involved as a volunteer on one of our Tours and will serve on one of our committees. Thanks Joyce!
As the New Year rolls around I will finish my second year as your Executive Director. I am very pleased that, for the first time in three years, LMB will finish 2007 in the black
financially.
A while back, someone asked me what the most difficult part of this job was. I think the most intriguing is having to model “perfect” traffic skills every time I ride. I’ve always considered myself a responsible bicyclist, but I will admit there have been times in the middle of nowhere with visibility for miles every way when I have “blown” a stop sign. I also admit I never gave it a second thought — until I took this job. Now I feel guilty unless I obey the law to the letter.
Even so, some of the bicycle riding I see is appalling. For bikes to be respected as a mode of transportation, we need to become responsible riders. So, as I continue to fight for bicyclists’ rights, I am also going to continue to encourage fellow bicyclists to accept their responsibilities.
Also, with the coming of the New Year, come resolutions. I have three to suggest to you for 2008.
1) I will model good bicycling behavior by operating my bike as I do a car, obeying all traffic laws. In addition, I will encourage (harass?) three friends to do the same.
2) I will promote safe, responsible bicycling by volunteering at a club or local-organization event or at LMB.
3) Whenever I ride my bike, I will remember that, “Any time I can ride my bike is a good time!”
Thank you for your support in 2007. I am wishing for 2008 to be a great year for all of us!
