League of Michigan Bicyclists Position on the Use of Helmets

Adopted January, 2003 by the LMB Board of Directors
Helmets are safety devices which prevent or mitigate head injuries in a crash or fall and, coupled with bicycle safety education, are aimed at the prevention of crashes and falls and their consequences.

The League of Michigan Bicyclists encourages bicyclists to wear helmets and strongly recommends the wearing of helmets that

(a) are properly fitted to the rider and

(b) meet the bicycle helmet standards of either the
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the American
Society of Testing and Materials, or the Snell Memorial Foundation.

The League recommends that cyclists frequently check their helmets for wear and damage, and replace the helmets every few years and/or in the event of a crash, in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

The League recommends that all of its affiliated bicycle clubs encourage their members and other bicyclists who participate in club rides to wear such helmets.

All League of Michigan Bicyclists bicycle tours will require helmets.

Make the Connection
The Office of Highway Safety Planning wants to ensure that no one is injured or killed in a tragedy that could have been prevented by the use of safety belts, child restraint systems, bicycle helmets or motorcycle helmets. Publicizing crashes where the use of safety equipment prevented serious injury or loss of life will go a long way toward educating friends, neighbors, and co-workers about safe driving practices.

Make the Connection is a program that gives you the opportunity to recognize people involved in crashes who were protected not only by using a safety belt, but also a child safety seat, wearing a bicycle or motorcycle helmet, or deployment of an airbag.

And, it’s easy to get involved. Fax in the form listed below or contact OHSP at (517) 333-5325 for more information
