Some Michigan HPVA Members and their Recumbents

markham.jpg FRED MARKHAM on his way to a record of 45.366 miles pedaled in one hour (since exceeded) in the Easy Racer Gold Rush at the 1989 International Human Powered Speed Championships at Michigan International Speedway. The MHPVA hosted the event.

terminal.jpg TERMINATOR was the fastest upright bicycle at the 1989 International Human Powered Speed Championships at Michigan International Speedway. Ron Elder pedaled it to a speed of 49.88 mph in the 200-meter sprints.

brown1.jpg MHPVA MEMBER Charles Brown's favorite material to make recumbent frames from is wood. He raced this bike at the 1994 Michigan HPV Rally. The asymetrical box structure frame has thin plywood sides and half-inch thick wood top and bottom.

stinson.jpg JON STINSON of Whitmore Lake, Mich., raced this homemade streamliner for many years. The frame was made mostly out of exhaust tubing and fairing was carved from foam insulation panels and then covered with fiberglass.

robson3.jpg STEVE ROBSON of Glencoe, Ontario, an MHPVA member, has built many recumbents--with two wheels and three. This tricycle, made mostly with parts from discarded bikes, can run on pavement.

simon.jpg JOHN SIMON of Portland, Mich., has raced this Moby streamliner for many years. It was built by Terry Hreno of Mooresville, Ind., in the early 1980's.

At the start were, from left, Lynn Christensen on a DeFelice recumbent; Sally and Bob Krzewinski on a Ryan DuPlex; Doug Smith on a Linear; Willie (son) and Rollin Nothwehr (father) on bikes built by Rollin; and Paul Pancella on a Lightning.

brick.jpg RAY and SHARIE BRICK of Cottage Grove, Minn., raced this tandem built by Ray at the 1998 Michigan HPV Rally. The frame is made of carbon fiber. There's front and rear suspension. The bike weighs only 41 pounds.
