MIKE MOWETT of St. Clair Shores finished third in the superstreet class on Saturday and second in the 39 and under age group in the Michigan Fast 50 and eight fastest overall (average speed of 23.4 mph).

11-YEAR-OLD Nick Myers of Holly was the lone junior class competitor on Saturday. His father is Chris Myers, a past competitor at the rally.

SEAN COSTIN of Arlington Heights, Ill., raced this front-wheel-drive Challenge NME to first place in the stock class on Saturday (five first places in a class with nine competitors) and was third in the 40-55 age group in the Michigan Fast 50 and fourth overall. In the 200-foot sprints Saturday (shown here), he did 41.1 mph.

IN THE MICHIGAN FAST 50, Warren Beauchamp of Big Rock, Ill., on his Velokraft NoComm leads Sean Costin of Arlington Heights, Ill., on his Challenge NME. Sean just edged Warren for third in the 40-55 age class, riding 30 laps in a time of 1 hour, 41 minutes and 48.069 seconds. Warren was at 48.084 seconds. The average speed for both was 25.129 mph.

RICK GRITTERS (above and above right) of Pella, Iowa, raced his latest creation to fourth in the stock class on Saturday, as well as his streamliner to second in that class. In contrast to his past rear-drive low racers, this is front-wheel-drive. He made the frame from 1-3/4 butted chromoly tubing, intended for BMX frames. Wheels are both 20 in. (406mm). He shortened Shimano Dura-Ace cranks to 145mm, which drive a 9-speed Shimano Ultegra cassette. Weight is 21 pounds.
RICK GRITTERS, still of Pella, Iowa, at speed (above) in the Michigan Fast 50 and gathering strength (right) after it was over to climb out. He won, traveling 51.2 miles in one hour and 41 minutes, at an average speed of 30.3 mph.

JOHN SIMON of Portland in his ancient Moby won the streamliner class on Saturday and was second overall in the Michigan Fast 50. He rode the 50 miles at an average speed of 30.2 mph and finished about 22 seconds behind Rick Gritters.

DAN THORNE and daughter Julie Pitko came from Sault Ste. Marie to race his WizWheez Tandem TerraTrike. The frame comes apart because of S&S couplers and they were able to transport the otherwise very long trike INSIDE a Toyota Prius. The rear hub was replaced with a SRAM 3x9, which combined with a triple crank gives it 81 speeds and a gear range of 12-118. Since buying the trike in April, they rode it from Sault Ste. Marie to White Fish Point and back, 140 miles, in 11 hours. And Julie has used it to pull a trailer carrying her 5-year-old daughter.

BRUCE GORDON of Centralia, Ill., raced this made-in-Germany Zox 20x20. It has front-wheel-drive, rear suspension and "is remarkably quick." However, the stock seat is "awful," so was replaced. Bruce really likes the Zox, but as of mid-June it was for sale for $1,690. (www.recumbents.com/Forsale.asp) Bruce's Popcycle streamliner also was for sale, for $2,990.

BECKY AULENBACH of Marietta, Ill., maneuvers while pulling a trailer in the urban transportation contest. Underneath the fairing is a Catrike Pocket. Her friend, Dave Balfour, made the fairing from Zote foam, glued together. The trike has headlights. Dave also made the welded-steel tubing trailer.

THE TOP THREE in the Michigan Fast 50 were, from left, Dennis Grelk, third (and first in 39 and under age group); Rick Gritters, first overall and in 40-55 age group; and John Simon, second overall and in 40-55 group. Sponsors Bent Up Cycles and Mueller Human-Power (Windwrap fairings) provided half of the $500 total prize money.
