Recumbent-Friendly MI Time Trials

There are an abundance of time trial events in Michigan this year at which recumbents and regular upright bicycles are welcome. Last year several of our MHPVA members competed in these events. All are located near Metro Detroit.

Ten Mile Time Trials
Six monthly informal 10-mile time trials are set-up and conducted by the Cycling Saddlemen club on Hines Park Drive . The first two were on April 22 and May 13. The remaining dates are:
Saturday, June 10, 2006
Saturday, July 15, 2006
Saturday, August 19, 2006
Saturday, September 9, 2006

This is a 5-mile out and back course meaning you have to turn around in the middle of a two-lane road. There is one minor hill on the course. The route is closed on the Saturday mornings during the races during the summer months, but still open to joggers and other bicyclists. Start time is 9 a.m. A registration fee of $5 may be charged to non-club members. Just show up and bring a friend if you'd like. Typical turnout is about 20 to 35 riders. The latter two time trials are sanctioned by the U.S. Cycling Federation. Thanks to helpful encouragement from some recumbent riders last year, the directors of these events have created a HPV - Human Powered Vehicle class. Timing is done by a professional group, no transponders needed. Results are shown on a large projection TV under a picnic shelter. Pre-registration is required and costs approximately $20 to enter, plus $10 for a one-day USCF license (if not licensed). Typical turnout is 200 to 300 riders.

Time trials are sometimes called the "Race of Truth." It's just you versus the clock, which can be safer than road races with 20 to 100 riders turning a corner at once. Time trials can a great way to gauge your fitness from one trial to the next.
