Waterford 2004 President's Report
by Wally Kiehler
Waterford 2004 was a huge success. I was worried about the rainy weather we've had all Spring.  But the rain stopped for us and we had around 42 competitors for Saturday, our first day of racing.

It was interesting to note that we had riders travel hundreds of miles from several states and Canada to compete.  I think the "long distance" award went to Jim Verheul, who flew with his Bacchetta Aero from California.

We also had riders in all six HPRA classes, with the largest number in the stock class. There were 23 participants.

After Saturday's last event, about half of the competitors met at the nearby Big Boy restaurant, where they swapped racing stories before heading home or back to the race track to camp for the evening.  Several riders and families camped out Friday and Saturday evenings.  I camped Saturday and really enjoyed socializing and getting to know the participants even more.  This also eliminated travel time for me to and from the track each day.

I want to thank:
Bill Frey  for being in charge of registration, collecting money and organizing the race results for this event.  Also for setting up the 1-kilometer course.

Jon and Carol Stinson  for helping with registration, money collection, lap counting, sprint results, and setting up the road race course. Terry Gerweck for doing technical inspections and sprint timings. Mike Eliasohn for taking photos and gathering/editing the stories for this newsletter. Paul Pancella  for organizing his urban transportation contest again. There seemed to be more participants this year. Several riders brought another vehicle just for this fun event. Warren Beauchamp  for bringing the HPRA timing equipment and knowing how to use it. And lastly Paul Bruneau for putting this Web site together.

The MHPVA has always been interested in putting on a first-class weekend of competition which offers a variety of events that test every rider and vehicle in many different ways.  We are always open for suggestions on how to improve our rally.

I am looking forward to seeing you all again next year.

Letter to the Editor
As one of the MHPVA's long-time members and competitors at Waterford, I must protest some of the changes I see happening to the organization.

It seems every edition of the newsletter is set in smaller and smaller print, and now you have to get into this newfangled computer stuff!  I anxiously await the day this "Internet" fad fades away!

It's pretty obvious to us long-time competitors that the management at Waterford Hills race track have been gradually steepening that hill over the years. I would like to know why they have done so in such secrecy. You would think they would come clean and admit to it.

Further, the timing and lap counting is getting somewhat erratic. The lap counters are missing me more and more as the years go by.

And finally, these are supposed to be human  powered vehicles. Will someone please test that Costin fellow with Kryptonite?

Thank you,
