It is with great disappointment that we must announce that LMB is canceling the Pedal & Paddle Bicycle Tour scheduled for September 16-18. After consultation with LMB staff, Board of Directors, and tour volunteers, we have come to the consensus that it is in the best interest of the organization to cancel the event for 2016.
LMB Tours play a significant role in financially underwriting LMB's mission so we did not make the decision lightly. We apologize for any disappointment and inconvenience this may bring. We have been working through various scenarios the past couple weeks regarding how we could still pull off a successful event, but the cards were simply not in our favor this year. We would like to thank our riders for their understanding and sincerely appreciate their support and interest in our tours.
The event is being canceled for two primary reasons:
1) Low Ridership
Despite our best efforts to creatively promote the tour throughout the spring and summer, registrations have been far below average. While our other three tours did remarkably well this year, Pedal & Paddle struggled to attract riders. We currently only have 27 riders registered, which is about half the amount our organization needs to offset the cost of hosting the tour.
2) Tour Director
Finances aside, an even more significant factor is staffing related. As you likely are aware, Scott Elliott, LMB's Tour Director, was hit by a drunk driver while bicycling near Coldwater, MI three weeks ago. He suffered significant injuries as a result of the crash. I am pleased to share that Scott is recovering at home with his family and that the driver was apprehended. However, while Scott is making strides every day, he still has a long road to recovery. He currently is not in a position to direct the event and organize the various logistics leading up to the tour. We have exhausted all other options of filling the role on short notice.
Thank you again for your understanding. We look forward to Pedal and Paddle 2017 and hope you will consider joining us then!
