UPDATE: Last week, LMB launched a friendly petition urging Representative Heise to schedule a Criminal Justice hearing for HB 4792 and 4799. We are happy to report that Representative Heise has already responded to the petition, stating his support for the bills and indicating that he will hold a hearing for the bills once the Legislature is back in session this fall. Bicyclists are still welcome to sign the petition, however, to show continued support for the bills.

LMB will now work to communicate with individual Criminal Justice committee members. Please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. LMB is pleased to report that our vulnerable roadway user legislation was introduced earlier this month as HB 4792 and 4799. The legislation, sponsored by Representatives McBroom and Nathan is aimed at protecting bicyclists and educating motorists about safely sharing Michigan roads.

The bi-partisan bill package creates enhanced penalties for drivers who injure or a kill a vulnerable roadway user defined as a bicyclist, pedestrian, or wheelchair user. HB 4792 and HB 4799 are a reintroduction of bills introduced in a previous session, where the bills passed out of the House with broad bi-partisan support.

LMB organized support for the reintroduction of the vulnerable roadway user bills during our Bicycle Advocacy Day on May 22, which resulted in 95 face-to-face meetings where bicyclists urged their legislators to co-sponsor the legislation. As a result of this effort and a parallel online action, 20 individual lawmakers signed-on as cosponsors to the bills, including Representative Heise, the Chair of the Criminal Justice Committee, which is where the bills have been referred.

A complete list of co-sponsors can be found below. If your Representative is on this list, please take a moment to send them a quick thank you note.

We also ask everyone to sign our petition urging Representative Heise to schedule a Criminal Justice hearing for HB 4792 and 4799. Please include any personal stories about why this legislation is meaningful to you.
