Description :
Our host city, Alpena, is a bustling, small city filled with friendly people and offering lots to see and do. In addition to 3 glorious days of bicycling inthe Alpena area, there is much to do in your non riding time.
Situated on Lake Huron's Thunder Bay, Alpena is a premier location for Great Lakes maritime heritage and recreation. Start your visit along the sunrise coast with a walk or bicycle along a 16-mile path winding through Alpena's plentiful public parks and beaches. Taste locally made wine at our country winery, enjoy hot coffee and conversation at a downtown cafe or dinner at a local saloon that catered to rough and ready lumberjacks. Explore historic lighthouses by day or spend the night for a true taste of the life of a lighthouse keeper. Some of the best of Alpena lies off shore, so get out on the water for a Great Lakes fishing charter, take an afternoon sail aboard a tall ship, or grab some scuba gear and dive into history on one of the area's 200 shipwrecks. To explore a shipwreck without getting wet, head to the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary's Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center where you will find interactive exhibits that explore the exciting maritime history, shipwrecks, and archaeology of the Great Lakes. Fishing, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, or snorkeling.
The bicycling and the many things to see and do in Alpena will provide memorable experiences for the whole family.
Thursday, June 13th
After you check in for the tour at Alpena Community College and found your lodging accomodation, please take some time to explore downtown Alpena and the surrounding area.
The wine and cheese reception will be held before and after the "Pre Ride Riders Meeting." The reception will start at 7:00 pm and end at 8:30 pm. Please plan to be at the rider's meeting which will start at 7:30 pm as we orient everyone to the next three days.
Friday, June 14th
The Sunrise weekend will begin with specatacular views of the Sunrise for those getting up early enough. After a hearty breakfast we will be on the road to the Hubbard Lake area.
Hubbard Lake is the 12th largest inland lake in Michigan. The area boasts many places to fuel up and to have lunch. You will enjoy the beautiful scenery as you circle the lake.
After leaving Hubbard Lake you will pass through Amish country as you head for Ossineke, a quaint village with family fun for all seasons. Ossineke has sandy beaches along Lake Huron which are excellent for swimming.
From Ossineke you will ride on the wide shouldes of US 23 as you hug the coast of Lake Huron back into Alpena. The route through Alpena will take you past the harbor and through downtown before ending back at Alpena Community College.
Saturday, June 15th
The long route will take you past Long Lake and Grand Lake and to Presque Isle Harbor on Lake Huron. At the Harbor you can stop and see the 21st Annual Antique Wooden Boat Show with dozens of authentic vintage wooden boats on display along with an arts and crafts show.
Just a short ride from the Harbor you will find the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse and have an opportunity to tour the light keeper's cabin and climb the old light tower. It has a reputation of being haunted...so they say.
Down the road is the New Presque Isle Lighthouse, keeper's house and gift shop. There is plenty of maritime history to keep those aficionados interested. The picnic area is an ideal setting to stop and have a snack.
The real attraction for the day may be the Maplewood Tavern? This is part tavern and part museum. It is the home of the Guinness World Record's longest serving bartender, 93 year old Clarice Grenkowicz. She has been the primary bartender at the tavern for 72 years. This will be the site of a SAG stop so you can experience it either on the way out or the way back. But don't miss it!
Sunday, June 16th

We will start off Sunday with a group start to celebrate a great weekend of bicycling as we parade out of Alpena along the Thunder Bay River.
Our route will allow us to enjoy the beauty of the Thunder Bay River as we head westward. We will then head north to Long Lake Highway, before heading back to Alpena.
As we conclude our ride it will be time to say good-bye to old friends and new ones we made this weekend.
As you pack up your gear and head home you will understand why the Sunrise Coast is a wonderful place to visit and experience year after year.
