Context Sensitive Solutions

CSSLogo_162572_71Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS) is a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to developing transportation projects. Under CSS, MDOT solicits dialogue with local governments, road commissions, industry groups, land use advocates, and state agencies early in a project's planning phase. A cooperative spirit and an awareness of community interests help achieve the ultimate goal--projects that fit their surroundings while effectively serving transportation needs.

CSS is a promising new approach to transportation planning.  CSS is still in its infancy in Michigan with very few transportation projects having actually been designed and constructed under this new policy. LMB is hopefully that CSS will allow bicyclists to have a greater voice in the early planning stages of transportation projects.  While CSS is no substitution for a comprehensive Complete Streets policy, it is one more opportunity for advocates to insure that the needs of bicyclists are being incorporated into ALL Michigan road projects.
