Our 5-foot safe passing and driver’s education improvement bills, which were reintroduced this year after not being put to a vote in the last legislative session, are up for a hearing on Wednesday, September 27 in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee in the Binsfield Building, Room 1300, in Lansing.
We need your help to get them voted out of Committee! Please sign our new Action Alert to send an email to the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee urging them to support these bills.
The 5-foot safe passing bill was reintroduced this year as SB 123 and 170, the driver's education improvement bill as SB 124. Companion bills SB 580 and 581, sponsored by Senator O'Brien and supported by LMB that strengthen distracted driving penalties, are also up for hearing at the same time.
Last September, the members of this Committee voted unanimously in favor of the previous versions of the bills; we are optimistic that we will see the same action at this hearing.
If you have previously contacted your lawmakers regarding these bills, thank you! As this Action Alert specifically contacts committee members ahead of the upcoming hearing, please sign this new Action Alert even if you have signed previous calls to action.
If you are able to attend the hearing, we encourage you to help us fill the room with supporters. You will have the opportunity to submit a card indicating your support for the bills. To help us expedite the Committee’s vote, we urge that you do not request time to speak unless you have coordinated with us in advance.
