Dear Cycling Friends,
In 2014 LMB made significant strides for Michigan bicyclists because of direct support from individuals like yourself. In 2015, we plan to build upon these gains with your support to continue to promote bicycling and the safety of bicyclists in Michigan. This year our Annual Campaign has been enhanced through the generosity of a number of supporters who already donated over $12,000 in challenge gifts. To continue to be the voice for safer bicycling in Michigan, we now ask for your help to match these gifts.
This year LMB led the charge on a number of policy issues to advance cycling in Michigan including efforts to improve driver's education in Michigan. After successfully ushering Nathan's Law unanimously through the House – collecting 89 out of 110 Representatives as co-sponsors along the way – LMB rallied similar bipartisan support in the Senate. I'm pleased to report that in October Governor Snyder signed the bill into law as the Nathan Bower Act. The new law enhances driver's education to include more "information concerning the laws pertaining to bicycles and motorcycles and...emphasize awareness of their operation on the streets..." This major policy victory could not have happened without your direct support!
In 2015, LMB will build on successes like Nathan's Law as we push for a safe passing standard. LMB is currently working closely with a bill sponsor to introduce 5-foot passing legislation to require drivers to pass bicyclists with a minimum of five feet. This law will safeguard bicyclists by providing drivers clear guidance on how to safely pass bicyclists. The 5-foot passing campaign will be a major legislative focus throughout 2015. With your support, we believe that Michigan can become the first state to enact a 5-foot passing standard.
These are just a couple examples of how your contributions ensure that bicyclists have a strong voice in Michigan. The enclosed brochure provides more information about why we need your financial support. I hope you agree that LMB's voice for safer bicycling is being heard and that you will invest towards making our voice even louder in 2015 by donating to LMB. Our Challenge Fund is a great way to maximize the impact of your gift. On behalf of the LMB board and staff, I thank you for considering LMB during your year-end giving.
It has been my pleasure to be the Executive Director of LMB for the last nine years. As I look towards my retirement the first of the year, I do so in the confidence that the organization is in great hands as John Lindenmayer, our current Advocacy & Policy Director, takes over as the next Executive Director. John has been responsible for numerous LMB legislative victories in the past and his vision for the future will only grow LMB's voice. I look forward to the organization flourishing under his leadership.
