Talking Bicyclingby Rich Moeller
In November I happened to find in Kmart "valve stem blinky lights." They were not very expensive ($7.99) so I bought a pair to try out.

Sometimes riding in the rain cannot be avoided. So what do you do to stay comfortable. I find that most commercial rain jackets, hats and pants have no breathability and therefore create more moisture inside them then getting rained on does. A couple of years ago I stumbled onto what works best for me, thanks to a tip from Carrie Baic, Williamsburg.

Over the years I have tried about every type of riding shoe and configuration to keep my feet warm in the winter. If you look back through previous Talking Bicycling stories you will see several of my trial and error solutions. I have tried shoe covers, chemical warmers, heated insoles and even a pair of Lake Winter Riding boots. Nothing has worked as well as the Merrell Boots I bought a year ago.

As a commuter I am always looking for things that make me more visible on gray days, in the rain and/or at night. I stumbled across some wonderful long fingered gloves at Lowe's of all places. A few years ago I started using "mechanic" gloves when doing woodworking and general work around the house to protect my hands from the inevitable nicks and bruises.

A few years ago I wanted to convert my Specialized Allez to an all around bike that I could commute with and take day trips with. I wanted to put fenders on it, but it had no braze on for fenders. I decided to try boltless fenders.

A couple of years ago after a week long tour I experienced some pain in my pelvic area that I had not before. I decided to try out a saddle with the anatomic cut out to see if that would help the situation. Since I ride six different bikes on a regular basis I decided to just outfit the bike I normally do week long tours with this saddle.

It seems that other LMB members are also "hooked" on experimenting with equipment. Irwin Danto from West Bloomfield sent me this following review on lights. Thanks to Irwin for his insights and I encourage anyone that wants to share their insights to send me a review and we will publish it.

I have tried most every way to carry stuff when commuting. I regularly use a backpack, rack pack, Acorn bag or pannier to commute with. I know that there are endless debates at to which of these (or other methods) are the best. I use them all and like them equally, For me it boils down to the bike I want to ride and the weather conditions.
For this article I want to talk about my experiences with the Novara Commuter Single Pannier. For my bikes that have racks I prefer a single pannier to carry my "stuff." I have used a rack pack, but generally find these are marginal as far as being large enough.

Five years ago I bought my first Gore Bike Wear shell. It was completely yellow and the arms zipped off to form a vest. It was good in the rain but with it's lining it was a little warm to wear in the summer. I found it to be a perfect spring and fall jacket. My only complaint over the years was the zipper. This spring the zipper began showing signs of failure and since I didn't think the cool weather would ever change I went looking for a new jacket.

For those that have been reading "Talking Bicycling" for awhile you know that I have had this ongoing quest to have warm feet in the dead of winter. I have tried many different solutions and combinations over the years.
This winter I experimented with and inner sole called Toasty Feet.
