Our 2013 Year End Appeal Campaign is currently underway. Our goal for 2013 is $13,000 ("13 in 13").
Please consider supporting LMB with your donation as we continue to work to make sure that bicycling issues are kept at the forefront of the discussion on transportation safety in Michigan.
We are working to make sure that bicyclists don't get cut out of the picture by:
Continuing to work on bicycle-related legislation.
Currently, our Vulnerable Roadway User and Right Turn Signal Update bills are advancing through the legislature. We hope to enact these bills still this session. In order to make these initiatives a reality, we need to stay vigilant.
Continuing to be a voice for bicyclists on issues such as "Bikes on Trains" and Michigan Complete Streets.
In September of 2013, after years of pressure by LMB, Amtrak announced that it will allow "roll on" bikes, starting on their Blue Water line. Under LMB's leadership, the Complete Streets movement continues to expand across the state. Michigan now boasts nearly 90 locally adopted ordinances, policies, and resolutions – the most in the country. LMB's success on these long-term campaigns is a direct result of the encouragement and financial support we receive from bicyclists across Michigan.
Providing education for law enforcement personnel.
The application of the Motor Vehicle Code in respect to bicyclists has been very uneven across the state by law enforcement personnel. In 2013 we hosted three Community Bicycle Safety for Law Enforcement trainings in addition to presenting at the Michigan Traffic Safety Summit in March.
In 2014 we will conduct at least five more trainings in various locations across the state in addition to presenting once again at the Traffic Safety Summit.
In other exciting news on the law enforcement front, LMB once again defended bicyclists' fundamental right to use the roads by fending off a bogus "impeding traffic" ticket, issued to LMB's own, John Lindenmayer. After winning his appeal in District Court, LMB distributed a write up of the case to 620 law enforcement agencies across the state. Your support will allow us to continue to seek clarification in law and expand our efforts to educate law enforcement.
Launching a statewide "Share the Road Campaign."
LMB is pleased to report that our Share MI Roads campaign was recently adopted as a priority project of Trans4M, a statewide coalition working to create a stronger Michigan through transportation policy reform. We are in the process of building a team of supporters to develop new educational materials for drivers and bicyclists on safely sharing the road. Your financial support is vital to helping us launch this new effort.
Continuing to distribute essential bicycle-safety literature.
In 2013, LMB unveiled our revised, full color version of What Every Michigan Bicyclist Must Know and began offering organizations, clubs, and law enforcement the opportunity to custom imprint logos on the youth version of the publication. Combined, LMB distributed an amazing 44,000 copies of these booklets. Additionally, both booklets were recognized by the Governor's Traffic Safety Advisory Commission with a Outstanding Traffic Safety Achievement Award. The printing and distribution of these publications continues to be funded primarily through individual donations.
Please consider how LMB's efforts will make you safer on the road and consider helping us with our campaign to make Michigan a safer place to ride your bicycle by making a donation.
