ed_road1As roadways and bike trails become increasingly complex and congested, there is a need for more knowledge on how to safely ride a bicycle. The League of American Bicyclist's Smart Cycling program provides the tips, tools, and techniques to ride safely and confidently.

The Smart Cycling program is a set of curricula for adults and children and the certified instructors that teach it. Smart Cycling classes are taught across the United States by certified League of American Bicyclist Cycling Instructors (LCI).

For information on how you can join a class or become a LCI, visit the League of American Bicyclist (LAB) website.

The Bicycle Commuting power point has been designed to be used in classes teaching beginners about commuting by bicycle. The presentation is designed to fit in a one hour time slot. It can be expanded to fit a longer time slot if needed. The Bicycle Commuting power point can be downloaded here Bicycle Commuting.

The slides are reviewed below. The comments made are intended to be used as a guide. The power point is designed so that each slide leads the presenter into what he/she needs to talk about. It is important that the presenter put his/her own twist on the subject.

Everyone-adult and child-should wear bicycle helmets each time they ride. Helmets are the single most effective way to prevent head injuries resulting from bicycle crashes. Wearing a helmet each ride can encourage the same smart behavior in others.

New helmets must meet the uniform safety standard issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC); use an old helmet only if it has a seal from one or more of the voluntary bicycle helmet standards, such as ASTM, Snell, or ANSI. Look for the certification seal labeled on the helmet

Replace any helmet that has been involved in a crash or is damaged. The helmet must fit the person's head now, not a helmet to "grow into."

Correct bike fit can be a highly technical process. However the suggestions listed below are "rule of thumb" that BikeFit10will give the rider a very good fit.

Frame Size: The simplest way to measure correct frame size is to straddle the frame in your shoes. There should be 1-3" of clearance between the top tube and your crotch.
